OnionShare

Securely share files, host websites, and chat using the Tor network

🧅 OnionShare is an open-source tool that makes it easy for people to securely and anonymously share files, host websites, and chat with friends using the Tor network. It is available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux, and it comes preinstalled in operating systems like QubesOS, Tails, and ParrotOS.

OnionShare supports internet freedom by allowing you to host services directly on your computer so third parties don't have access to any of it, and you don't have to trust anybody else's machines. It also protects the anonymity of users from eavesdroppers: even if an attacker learns about the onion service, they still can't access anything so long as the private key is enabled.

Journalists and others needing to securely accept documents from other sources can set up an OnionShare service. They can also set up private, secure chat rooms that don't log anything and leave fewer traces than messaging apps where even disappearing messages may end up saved in notifications databases or on abandoned phones.

Impact

OnionShare enables secure file sharing, website hosting, and chat over Tor, protecting journalists, whistleblowers, and activists worldwide.

How your donation helps

OnionShare was first released in 2014, and it has seen a slowdown in development in recent years. Unrestricted funding would allow us to focus on essential maintenance, particularly with cross-platform packaging, and will allow for regular rapid releases and dependency updates. We would also use the funding to modernize the user experience, so that OnionShare is more intuitive and better aligned with the needs of today's users.
