Secure mobile archiving app for journalists and human rights defenders

Save is OpenArchive's premier project: a secure, cross-platform, FLOSS, mobile archiving app helps journalists, eyewitnesses, and human rights defenders securely archive, verify, and encrypt their critical evidentiary media workflows to mitigate the risks of surveillance, censorship, media manipulation, and data loss.

Save advances internet freedom by offering people security and sovereignty over the lifecycle of their media from point of capture, during transit, and on FLOSS servers and public trusts to create irrefutable historical records. It protects people and their media by: routing media over Tor and TLS to circumvent in-transit surveillance and interception, verifying media with Proofmode to make it tamper-evident, and safely preserving it publicly at the Internet Archive, and privately on ethical, FLOSS WebDAV-compatible backends like Nextcloud or OpenArchive’s novel secure p2p decentralized backend.

Save plays an essential role in the digital archiving and verification ecosystem – streamlining workflows that require trustworthy media capture and preservation, serving as a technical foundation for people handling sensitive, evidentiary, or high-value content. It promotes accessibility – both to the technology it leverages and the media it preserves – by equally prioritizing privacy and usability, which enables people to easily and securely capture media, verify it, and preserve it for the long-term."

Impact

Enables journalists and human rights defenders to securely capture, verify, and preserve evidentiary media while routing over Tor.

How your donation helps

With unrestricted funding, OpenArchive would keep Save ahead of emergent digital threats, maintaining its position as a trusted resource for secure evidentiary archiving worldwide. It would support timely updates, improved usability for low-tech high-risk communities, and strengthen cross-platform core infrastructure (iOS, Android, and F-Droid).

Flexible support lets us move fast when new security challenges arise, prioritize essential updates, localize in more languages, and expand our DAC program and train-the-trainer network to reach more communities.

These improvements make it safer and easier for everyone to archive evidence, expanding broad access to verifiable historic records – the cornerstone of an informed public.
