SecureDrop

Anonymous whistleblowing submission system for journalists and sources

SecureDrop is Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF)'s flagship project: a free and open-source whistleblower submission system that enables secure, anonymous communication between sources and journalists.

SecureDrop is used by over 60 major news organizations worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and ProPublica. Designed with an uncompromising focus on security, SecureDrop operates over the Tor network and uses strong compartmentalization and air-gapped systems to protect against surveillance and external threats. This architecture allows sources to share sensitive information and files without revealing their identity, even to the newsrooms receiving the material.

SecureDrop directly supports internet freedom by providing critical infrastructure for safe, anonymous speech in the digital age. It enables whistleblowers to expose wrongdoing without fear of retaliation, strengthens investigative journalism, and helps ensure that vital public-interest information can be shared despite increasing threats to privacy and press freedom.

Impact

Deployed at 60+ major newsrooms — including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and ProPublica — to receive whistleblower submissions anonymously over Tor.

How your donation helps

Unrestricted funding would allow FPF to adapt SecureDrop to rapidly evolving digital threats and newsroom needs, ensuring it remains a trusted tool for secure source communication worldwide. It would support deployment of the next-generation SecureDrop Server, improve usability for journalists and sources, and strengthen core infrastructure such as SecureDrop Server.

Crucially, flexible funding enables us to respond quickly to emerging security risks, invest in critical updates, and collaborate with partners to expand adoption.

These improvements increase the volume, safety, and impact of public-interest reporting by making it easier and safer for whistleblowers to come forward.
